Money Dance

Oh the drama of the money dances.  To those of you not in the know the money dance (or dollar dance, or apron dance) is a tradition where male guests pay to dance briefly with the bride, and sometimes female guests pay to dance with the groom.   Apparently it originated in Poland and was brought to the US by Immigrants.  Due to Pittsburgh’s large Polish communities there’s no wonder why it’s so prominent today.
I have overheard strangers arguing with mothers and friends bitching about future mother in laws.  If you do it or not there are great picture opportunities.

Sometimes even if you don’t plan for it it’ll happen spontaneously.

Where are you on the money dance fence?

  1. My family has always called it a bridal dance and everyone pays to dance with the bride (men and women). The majority of my family is eastern european too though.

My fiancee and I will be having a bridal dance at our wedding. Everyone looks forward to dancing with the bride and we get money. Everybody wins!

  3. So, this isn't specific to this post, but I have a friend who happens to be a wonderful wedding photographer. Might want to check her out: http://www.aislingphoto.com/

She lives in Atlanta but comes back to Western PA all the time for photo shoots (she's originally from here).

  4. The weddings that I have been to that had a money dance everyone was able to pay to dance with the bride or groom... I think it's a nice way for each guest to at least get a quick 15 seconds with one of the two, that way the bride and groom won't feel bad if they missed talking to someone.
